The body doesn't negotiate with appetite. It just keeps running — and running requires amino acids whether you feel like eating or not.
GLP-1 is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. The question is what's left on the plate when it's done.
GLP-1 may suppress appetite enough that many people struggle to get adequate protein. When overall intake drops substantially, the body may draw on muscle tissue to maintain amino acid availability — a response associated with inadequate protein intake during caloric restriction, not a direct effect of the medication.
The goal is usually to reduce fat mass while preserving lean mass. Studies show a meaningful proportion of weight lost on GLP-1 medications can come from lean tissue alongside fat. Higher protein intake and resistance exercise are two of the most evidence-supported strategies for reducing this.
