What is leaky gut syndrome?

What is leaky gut syndrome?

The gut lining is supposed to be a controlled barrier. The leaky gut idea is that barrier becomes more porous than it should be, letting more substances cross into the bloodstream.

Tight junction proteins like claudin and occludin hold the cells of the gut lining together. When those tight junctions stop working properly, the barrier can become more permeable than normal.

Increased intestinal permeability became a serious research topic, even though mainstream medicine still rejects many broader wellness claims around leaky gut.
