Are probiotics good for you?

Are probiotics good for you?

The capsule says 10 billion CFU. The gut contains 38 trillion bacteria.

Probiotic supplements represent a tiny fraction of total gut bacteria. Their effect reflects targeted competition with pathogens, not population replacement. Research shows certain strains can significantly reduce antibiotic-associated diarrhea β€” one of the most well-supported clinical uses of probiotics.

Some Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains can compete with pathogens for adhesion sites and produce bacteriocins that inhibit harmful bacterial growth β€” mechanisms that help explain why some strains reduce infection-related diarrhea.

The label rarely tells you what you need to know. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG has strong evidence for diarrhea prevention; Saccharomyces boulardii for C. difficile; generic 'probiotic blend' labels tell you almost nothing clinically useful.
